HTML

On January 23, my teacher taught us a little bit of HTML. He said that HTML was the backbone behind every website. Besides, he also said that we would learn how to create a website on our own using HTML!  My teacher showed it to us and the whole class was very excited!

I have found a video that you all can learn more about HTML!

You can also learn how to create websites using HTML on this handy website!

Apparently, HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and is the universal markup language for the Web.

HTML also lets people format text, add graphics, create links, input forms, frames and tables, etc., and save it all in a text file that any browser can read and display.

I also learnt some basic stuff about HTML too! Did you know that when creating HTML, the part that says <html> ... <html> indicates that the contents are HTML. <head> ... <head> contains web page information, i.e. <title> ... <title>. <body> ... <body> contains main content and structure.

Besides, my teacher also taught us about HTML tags. I learnt that there are 3 parts to HTML tags, start tag, content, and end tags. There are various HTML tags such as <p> ... <p>, and etc...

HTML elements form the building blocks of all websites. HTML allows images and objects to be embedded and can be used to create interactive forms.

I also learnt that when we need to create a web page or website, we save the file in either .html or .htm .

Besides, i also learnt that CSS is often used together with HTML as CSS (Casading Style Sheets) is used to style HTML elements.

Did you know that  HTML5 will be the new standard for HTML? The previous version of HTML, HTML 4.01, came in 1999. The web has changed a lot since then. HTML5 is still a work in progress. However, the major browsers support many of the new HTML5 elements and APIs.

While self studying, I found out that there was a group called The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) that is  a community of people interested in evolving HTML and related technologies. The WHATWG was founded by individuals from Apple, the Mozilla Foundation and Opera Software in 2004.

I hope that this post has benefited you all a lot!

Intro to Web 2.0

On 16 January, it was my second infocomm lesson. That day, my teacher taught the class about Web 2.0. He showed the whole class a very interesting video about Web 2.0. The link to the video he showed us is below.

Besides, he also let us view another video about Web 1.0 versus Web 2.0!

The link is also shown below.

I have learnt much from this lesson, such as the fact that it allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators (prosumers) of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where users (consumers) are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites, hosted services, web applications, mashups and folksonomies.

Besides, Web 2.0 technologies can provide students with more engagement through greater customization and choice of topics, and less distraction from their peers!

Syndication of site content as a Web 2.0 feature. Syndication uses standardized protocols to permit end-users to make use of a site's data in another context (such as another website, a browser plugin, or a separate desktop application).

In addition, I also realise that Web 2.0 often uses machine-based interactions such as REST and SOAP. Servers often expose proprietary Application programming interfaces (API), but standard APIs (for example, for posting to a blog or notifying a blog update) have also come into use.

Web 2.0 websites also allow users to do more than just retrieve information. Instead of merely 'reading', a user is invited to 'write' as well, or contribute to the content available to everyone in a user friendly way.

While self studying, I also found out that there was a Web 3.0.

I also spot a video on Web 3.0! It is quite interesting!

First Infocomm lesson of the year!

On 9 January, it was my first Infocomm lesson of my Secondary 1 year! I was pretty excited as I got to use the computers and learn about IT stuff!

During the lesson, we learnt about Web and New Media, which my teacher, Mr Kent Cheong, taught us about. He also showed us a very interesting video that Microsoft created.

The link is shown below!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yWzKvQXsYM&feature=player_detailpage!

Besides the interesting video, Mr Kent also posted on the school learning platform a 57 slides reading resource about the Internet and the World Wide Web.

These are some of the interesting facts that I got  from the 57 slides reading resources

1) I now know the history of the Internet. Did you know that Internet originated from Aparanet, which was a Networking project by Pentagon's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and that its goal was to allow scientists at different locations to share information and also to function if part of network were disabled?

2)I learnt how the Internet works! I learnt that we can connect to the Internet either by slow-speed technology (Dial-up access) or by high speed connections (Digital Subscriber Line or cable modem).

3)I am aware how to choose which kind of broadband provider. Cable Modem is the best, if you can get it, DSL has most service options, while satellite is best for rural homes.

4)I realise that there are many different ways to surf the internet, such as ISP, OSP and Wireless Service Internet Provider.

5)I have acquired the knowledge of what is the World Wide Web. It is a World Wide collection of electronic documents, and each electronic document is called a webpage.

6) I am also informed of what is a web browser. It is a program that allows us to view web pages. There are many web browsers, such as chrome, firefox, safari and etc.

7) I know the definition of what is a URL. It stands for Uniform Resource Locator, which is an unique address for a web page.

8) I gain some understanding of what is multimedia. It is an application integrating text with all other media elements, such as Graphics, Animation, Audio, Video, and Virtual Reality.

9) I become aware of what graphics formats are used on the Web. There are many of these, but I shall list some of the most common points, such as BMP, JPEG, PNG, GIF and TIFF.

10)I learnt about Web Publishing too. What is Web Publishing, you may ask. Web Publishing is the development and maintenance of Web pages,

This is a summary of what I learnt during my first infocomm lesson!
